To use Super Resolution, you must first open a file in Camera Raw. So, a 4000 X 4000 image would become an 8000 X 8000 image and so on. When you use Super Resolution it basically doubles the resolution of your image (technically making it have 4 times the number of pixels). This means that you can still recover highlights, change the white balance and so on, just as you would any other raw file. What makes super resolution different is that it does it as part of the “Enhance” feature (previously called “Enhance Details” and creates a linear DNG file that still acts and behaves like a RAW file. Topaz labs has a popular plug-in that does the same kind of thing. Using AI for this kind of thing isn’t new or unique to Photoshop.
It uses artificial intelligence to calculate the best method of scaling, and to reduce artefacts, and gives a much better result than traditional scaling methods in Photoshop. Super Resolution is a new method of up-scaling an image in Photoshop that can be found inside of Camera Raw.

Now when I open ANY tiff or jpeg in Photoshop it only opens in Cameral Raw rather than the default Photoshop screen. However, a new issue (nuisance) appeared. Now the enhance function is visible with either jpegs or tiffs. Then I changed the file handling in camera raw from "automatically open jpegs (tiffs) with settings" to "automatically open all supported jpegs (tiff).Ĭlosed CC and and then rebooted CC. Would not work with either jpeg or tiff files. Tried the "enahnce" option for the first time this morning. And the Convert to DNG commmand in Lightroom Classic works when non-raw files are selected.

For example, if you use that software to merge TIFF or JPEG images as a panorama, the resulting file is DNG. Camera Raw and Lightroom have already used this capability in the past. But although Super Resolution might work best with raw data, it does not require a raw image, so it is available as could ACR save a DNG file with RAW data with mosaic raw image data.ĭNG can be a container format, so the data in it doesn’t have to be raw. If you are thinking about Raw Details, then you are correct, that cannot be done to a non-raw file, so Raw Details is disabled as shown in the screen shot. There are two parts to the Enhance command: Raw Details (the old Enhance Details feature), and the new Super Resolution feature. The screen shot below shows a JPEG image opened in Camera Raw (after enabling TIFF/JPEG support), with Super Resolution about to be applied.
